Breakwater to lead renovation, repositioning of Augusta Ramada

The newly acquired Ramada Hotel in downtown Augusta, Ga., is set to be renovated and repositioned with a soft-brand affiliation by its new ownership.

An affiliate of Breakwater partnered with BR Investments to purchase the property, which originally opened in 1974 as the Executive House Hotel and later rebranded under Ramada in 1999. Breakwater—a Charleston, S.C.-based investment and advisory firm—will oversee the full transformation of this 175-room hotel led by managing partner Matt Brendle.

The Georgia property is one of only two hotels in the U.S. designed by architect I.M. Pei, who is best known for the Louvre Pyramid in Paris. The company has tapped The Gettys Group to lead the branding and interior design while Rabun Architects will lead the architecture scope.

"We have the chance to transform the east end of Broad Street into a dynamic destination," Brendle said in a statement. "With vibrant public spaces, an outstanding F&B program and engaging events, the hotel will become the new beating heart of downtown Augusta—drawing locals and visitors alike."

Breakwater has also brought on a Charleston, S.C-based restaurateur to shape the hotel's food & beverage program. In addition, it has leased adjacent street-level and courtyard space across Broad Street to extend the guest experience beyond the hotel.
